What a Krugerrand is, technically
The Krugerrand has been struck by the South African Mint since 1967 and is the most widely-held bullion gold coin in the world. Fractional Krugerrands were introduced in 1980: the half-ounce (16.97g gross), quarter-ounce (8.48g gross) and tenth-ounce (3.39g gross). All four sizes share the same 22ct purity and the same obverse and reverse designs.
Why Krugerrands trade at near-spot bullion rates
Krugerrands are not numismatic coins. With over 70 million one-ounce Krugerrands minted since 1967, no individual date is materially scarcer than another within the common range.
