How much is a one-ounce Krugerrand worth today?A one-ounce Krugerrand is worth one troy ounce of fine gold at the current rate, less the dealer margin. At recent rates that is roughly £1,800-£2,000 per coin; the precise figure depends on the gold fix on the day.

Short answer

GoldPaid buys South African Krugerrand gold coins by post UK-wide: one-ounce (33.93g gross, 22ct, 1.0 troy oz fine gold), half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce. Bullion value is calculated on the day from the live gold fix, GBP/USD and the buyer margin. What a Krugerrand is, technically

The Krugerrand has been struck by the South African Mint since 1967 and is the most widely-held bullion gold coin in the world. The one-ounce Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold (31.1035 grams). The coin is 22ct gold (91.67%) with the remaining 8.33% being copper, which gives the coin its distinctive reddish-yellow tone and substantial physical resilience.

The gross weight of a one-ounce Krugerrand is 33.93 grams (one troy ounce of gold plus the copper alloy weight). Fractional Krugerrands were introduced in 1980: the half-ounce (16.97g gross), quarter-ounce (8.48g gross) and tenth-ounce (3.39g gross). All four sizes share the same 22ct purity and the same obverse and reverse designs.

Why Krugerrands trade at near-spot bullion rates

Krugerrands are not numismatic coins. With over 70 million one-ounce Krugerrands minted since 1967, no individual date is materially scarcer than another within the common range. The market treats them as pure bullion: a one-ounce Krugerrand is worth exactly one troy ounce of gold less the bullion dealer's spread.

For postal sale, that means the figure on the written offer is straightforward: (current dollar gold fix x GBP/USD rate) less the buyer's margin, per coin. There are no rarity premiums to research and no condition concerns within normal limits. A Krugerrand that has been kept in a coin tube versus one that has been carried in a pocket for thirty years both contain the same one ounce of gold.

Proof Krugerrands and presentation sets

The South African Mint has produced proof Krugerrands since 1967 as a parallel collector series. Proof coins are struck on polished blanks with mirror-finish fields and frosted devices; they are distinguishable from bullion strikes by the depth of the lettering and the field finish. Proof Krugerrands sell at modest premiums to bullion when complete with their original capsule and certificate of authenticity.

If your Krugerrand is in a sealed capsule and the original presentation case, do not remove it before posting. The capsule protects the proof finish and the case-and-certificate combination is what carries the small numismatic premium.

Posted bullion parcels and the cover question

One-ounce Krugerrands are individually worth more than half of a £2,500 Special Delivery cover at recent rates. A parcel of two one-ounce Krugerrands routinely approaches the standard cover limit. For larger parcels we arrange a higher cover level before issuing the label.

Pack each coin in its own coin tube or small coin envelope to prevent contact damage in transit. Krugerrands are durable but contact between two coins in a bag will create rim marks that, while harmless to bullion value, do affect any future resale as numismatic items.

The proof, not the promise

Anyone can say "best price". GoldPaid does not. Instead the process is laid bare: a measured XRF assay, calibrated weighing, the live market rate, and a written breakdown you read at home before you commit to anything. The reassurance here is structural, built into how the service works, rather than asserted in a slogan.

Common questions

Do you pay different rates for different Krugerrand dates?

No, except for proof issues sold complete with their original case and certificate. All common-date bullion Krugerrands are valued at the same per-coin bullion rate.

Should I clean my Krugerrand before posting?

Never clean gold coins. Cleaning leaves scratches that are invisible to the eye but visible under loupe magnification and damages future resale. Send the coin as it is.

Can I send Krugerrands in different sizes in one parcel?

Yes. One-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce coins are all assessed separately and each line of the written offer shows the size and the per-coin value.

What happens if my Krugerrand turns out to be a fake?

XRF testing detects counterfeit coins immediately because the metal composition will not match the genuine 22ct gold profile. Suspected fakes are returned to you at no cost with an explanation.

How quickly are Krugerrands paid for?

The same way as any other parcel: written offer the same working day as arrival, Faster Payments out within minutes of your acceptance reply.
