- Can I ask first?
- Yes. WhatsApp a photo to 07944 014111, 8am to 9pm, every day, and we reply with an idea of what it is worth. Nothing is posted until you decide.
- Is it safe to post?
- Your parcel travels by Royal Mail Special Delivery, tracked and signed for. Royal Mail cover may be available up to £2,500 depending on the postal method and cover level used. GoldPaid can confirm the appropriate postal option before you post.
- How is it tested?
- Your parcel is signed for on arrival and opened at our Bristol office, where each item is weighed and tested with an XRF analyser, an X-ray test that reads the metal without marking it. Your written offer lists each piece with its weight, purity and figure.
- What if I say no?
- We return everything by Royal Mail Special Delivery at our cost. Saying no costs you nothing.
- When am I paid?
- Only if you accept the written offer. We pay by bank transfer (Faster Payments), and we aim to pay within one working hour of your acceptance.
- How long does an offer last?
- Each written offer is dated and holds for a limited time, because metal prices move. If it lapses, we re-run it at that day’s rate.
- Who am I dealing with?
- GOLDPAID LTD, registered in England and Wales, run by founder Rocco Clayfield. Our office is at Unit 217, Bristol Business Centre, 179 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 2AG. We are postal only, so there is no counter to visit. Before we pay, we ask every seller for a photo of their passport or driving licence.

How everyday jewellery is valued
The offer is worked on the gold weight alone, after stones and steel parts are weighed out. A 9ct curb chain, a pair of 9ct hoop earrings, an 18ct wedding band and a 22ct bangle are each valued on the gold they hold, whatever their condition.

Solid, plated or hollow: what to check before you post
- Solid gold marks. 375 (9ct), 585 (14ct), 750 (18ct), 916 (22ct) and 999 (24ct). A worn or missing mark is fine: the XRF test reads the metal itself. Read your hallmark.
- Plated or filled marks. GP, GE, RGP, “rolled gold” or a fraction such as 1/20 12K GF mean a thin gold layer over base metal. We pay nothing for those as gold and send them back free. Plated, filled or solid shows the difference.
- Hollow pieces. Hollow chains and bangles were sold widely in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s and look like solid ones. The price follows the weight, so a hollow piece pays less than its size suggests.
- Chains. Length does not change the price; weight does. Bolt rings and clasp springs are often steel and are weighed out.
- Mixed carats. A parcel is sorted by carat before weighing, so a 9ct chain posted with an 18ct ring is not averaged down to one blended rate.
Selling gold rings with stones
A stone-set ring is worked out in two parts. The gold is weighed without the stones and valued on its confirmed purity and the live market. Diamonds are assessed in-house on carat weight, cut, colour and clarity, coloured stones on species, size, colour and condition, and any stone that carries value appears as its own line on the written offer.
- Sell it complete. The usual route: the ring is bought whole, with the metal and each stone on separate lines.
- Keep the stone. Say so before you post. The stone is taken out at our own bench and returned loose by tracked post, and the offer covers the metal alone. You see that metal-only figure in writing before anyone touches the setting.
- Small accent stones. Tiny diamonds set around a centre stone or down the shoulders often cannot come out whole. If a stone cannot be removed intact it stays in, and you choose between selling the ring complete or having it back.
- Decline. The ring comes back as it arrived, stones in place, by Royal Mail Special Delivery at our cost.

What we pay nothing for, and the ID we ask for
What we pay nothing for. Gold-plated, gold-filled and rolled-gold pieces and costume jewellery: none of them holds gold a refiner can recover. Any such pieces in your parcel are listed at nil on the written valuation and returned free of charge by tracked post, whether you accept the offer on the rest or decline it. ID and ownership checks. Every seller sends a photograph of UK photo ID, a passport or a driving licence, whatever the parcel is worth. We check the name and address on the Royal Mail label against the name on the bank account, and ask you to confirm that the items are yours to sell. GoldPaid only buys from sellers aged 18 or over. When a piece is worth more than its gold
Some jewellery is worth more intact than by weight: Georgian and early Victorian work, signed pieces by established makers, Art Deco settings and unusual period construction. These are checked before an offer is written, not after.
When you send photos, mention any maker’s mark or signature, closed-back settings, an original fitted case, a date letter, or an old valuation. If a piece looks worth more to a collector than to a refiner, we say so and you are free to sell it elsewhere. Period detail: antique gold, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco.

- Send photos. WhatsApp a few pictures to 07944 014111, with any marks in shot. You get a rough figure and a steer on anything plated or collectable.
- Get the label. A free Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed label by email, usually within 30 minutes between 8am and 9pm, or a QR code for the Post Office counter.
- Post it. Wrap each piece in tissue or a small bag so nothing tangles or scratches, use any padded envelope and keep the receipt.
- We test and write it up. Your parcel is signed for on arrival and opened at our Bristol office, where each piece is weighed, XRF-tested and listed on the written offer, usually on the working day it arrives. Nothing is melted or unset.
- You decide. Accept all or part and we aim to pay by Faster Payments within one working hour of your acceptance. Decline and it comes back by Royal Mail Special Delivery at our cost.

Will my jewellery be melted straight away?
No. Nothing is melted, unset or altered before you accept the written offer. Decline and each piece comes back as it arrived.
What if I think the offer is too low?
Decline it and everything comes back free by Special Delivery. Each piece is listed with its weight, XRF purity and the rate applied, so you can check the sum and compare it with another buyer’s written figure.
Why not sell to a jeweller?
A jeweller who can resell a wearable piece may pay more than its gold for it, especially signed or antique pieces, so ask. You get a rough estimate from a photo before you post and the whole sum in writing before you decide, which makes the comparison simple: same weight, same carat, two written figures.
Do I need hallmarks to sell gold jewellery?
No. Plenty of genuine gold carries no readable mark, either because it was made outside the UK hallmarking system or because wear has removed the stamp. The XRF test reads the metal itself, so the offer reflects what the piece is rather than what it is stamped as.
Can I send gold, silver and costume jewellery in one parcel?
Yes. Send it as it is. Items are separated by metal and carat here, the precious metal is weighed and tested, and anything costume or plated is listed at nil and returned at no cost alongside your written breakdown.
What happens if Royal Mail loses my parcel?
Royal Mail cover may be available up to £2,500 depending on the postal method and cover level used. GoldPaid can confirm the appropriate postal option before you post. While the parcel is travelling to us it remains yours, so a claim for a lost parcel is made to Royal Mail by you, the sender, using your Post Office receipt. Tell us straight away and we help you make it.
Can XRF tell plated jewellery from solid?
XRF reads the surface, so a plated piece is also checked against its weight, wear points and marks before any figure is written. On solid gold, a jewellery-trade XRF analyser reports gold content to about ±0.1 to ±0.5 per cent absolute. XRF testing explained.
How fast is payment?
We aim to pay by Faster Payments within one working hour of your acceptance, straight to your bank account. GoldPaid never pays in cash.
Who am I sending it to?
