Does GoldPaid have a shop in Bangor? No. GoldPaid is a UK-wide postal service with no branches, so there is no shop in Bangor and no counter anywhere. The service runs entirely by post for Bangor charity shops, using a free prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery label, so the shop does not need to travel anywhere. The shop gets a free WhatsApp valuation before posting, a written itemised valuation on arrival, and a Faster Payment to the charity’s registered bank account once the offer is accepted.

Bangor donations, Welsh gold claims and reporting older finds

Wikipedia notes that gold in North Wales is often found in a band running from Barmouth past Dolgellau towards Snowdonia, and that the Gwynfynydd mine near Ganllwyd was among the largest. It also records that for ancient pieces such as the Mold Cape, it is not possible to confirm the gold is Welsh, because of strong trade links with Ireland at the time.

That caution is useful when a Bangor donation is described as Welsh gold. The origin of the metal is not something a hallmark shows, so keep any box, certificate or paperwork with the piece, and expect it to be valued on its tested gold content.

Older objects follow a separate route. PAS Cymru lists Finds Liaison Officers in Cardiff and Swansea and at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives, and GOV.UK says finders in Wales can get help from curators at Amgueddfa Cymru with reporting treasure to the coroner. Anything that looks dug up should be bagged on its own and checked before pricing.

Bangor specifics for charity shops

Bangor in north Wales sits on the LL postcode area (LL57) in Gwynedd, a university cathedral city at the Menai Strait. The wider LL catchment runs through Anglesey (LL58–LL77), Caernarfon, Betws-y-Coed and the north-coast resorts. For a parcel sent from Bangor to our Bristol office, check the Post Office acceptance time and the service on your label. Royal Mail’s Special Delivery terms explain working days, the separately purchased Saturday guarantee and the extra working day added for Parcel Collect. Service details checked 8 October 2026.

How it works for a charity shop in Bangor

GoldPaid is a UK-wide postal gold and silver buying service. The charity service is open to Bangor charity shops, head offices in Gwynedd, and charity-retail teams across the wider LL-postcode area, and it runs entirely by post. There is no Bangor shopfront to travel to, and no cash changes hands at the shop. Donated gold, silver, watches, coins, mixed jewellery, costume jewellery in bulk and hallmarked silverware are all valued in writing before anything is sold, and the charity’s registered bank account receives a Faster Payment once the offer is accepted. (Named-maker pottery, porcelain and vintage cameras are out of GoldPaid’s scope; the referral to auction routes is in the named-maker pottery guide and the vintage cameras guide.)

What decides your offer

Every parcel is opened at our Bristol office and each piece is handled on its own. Nothing is averaged across the parcel.

  1. Weight. Each item is weighed on scales. Stones, steel springs, non-gold clasps and cores are not paid as gold. The written breakdown explains the payable metal weight for each item, rather than treating everything on the scales as precious metal.
  2. Purity. Each item is tested with an XRF analyser, which reads the metals at the points tested without marking the item. A surface reading alone cannot establish the composition of a plated or filled piece. Hallmarks, construction and different components all need to be considered alongside the test.
  3. The market on the day. Gold and silver are priced against the live precious-metal market at the time your parcel is assessed, not at the time you posted.
  4. Condition and intact value. Broken is fine and does not reduce a metal offer. Where a piece is worth more intact (a named maker, a collectable coin, a locket with provenance) we tell you before testing, so you can choose.
  5. Anything that is not gold or silver. Plated, rolled-gold and base-metal items are listed on the offer at nothing and returned to you free. We never quietly keep them.

Why we do not publish a per-gram price list. A single printed rate hides the things that change the figure: hollow versus solid, stones, mixed carats in one bag, a mark that does not match the metal. We would rather show you the weight, the tested purity and the figure for each item, in writing, and let you decide. Final offers depend on inspection, item weight, purity, hallmarks, stones, non-gold components, condition and the live precious-metal market.

What you see before you decide. A written, itemised offer by WhatsApp or email: every item, its weight, its tested purity, and its figure. Accept and we aim to pay by bank transfer within one working hour. Decline and the whole parcel comes back by Royal Mail Special Delivery at our cost. No fee, no deduction, no questions.

Posting from Bangor

Bangor is a small cathedral city in Gwynedd, in the LL postcode area. Check the latest acceptance time at the Post Office before posting. The delivery commitment depends on the service purchased, the posting day and how the parcel is handed over.

None of this commits the shop. A Bangor shop can ask a question, send photos, or even post a parcel and still decline the written offer, with no fee and a free tracked return.

Royal Mail Special Delivery cover. Every prepaid label we send is Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, tracked end to end and signed for. Royal Mail cover may be available up to £2,500 depending on the postal method and cover level used. GoldPaid can confirm the appropriate postal option before you post. If a single parcel from a Bangor shop is worth more than that, ask before posting and we will split it across more than one prepaid label at no charge.

The process every charity shop runs

  1. Ask before you post. WhatsApp a photo of any donated item the shop is uncertain about to 07944 014111. Rocco Clayfield (GoldPaid founder) answers, gives a rough estimate, and tells the shop whether the parcel is worth posting.
  2. Free prepaid Royal Mail label. If the shop wants to proceed, we send a free Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed label, digital on WhatsApp, printable PDF by email, or a paper label by post if the shop doesn’t have a printer.
  3. Box it, drop at any Post Office. Pack the items securely. Hand the parcel over at any Post Office counter, keep the Special Delivery receipt, and the shop gets a tracking link by WhatsApp.
  4. Written XRF valuation. Every parcel is itemised on arrival. Precious metals are XRF-tested and priced against the live precious-metal market on the day. Watches and antiques are assessed individually, and each one is listed with its own figure on the written offer. Send a photo of any coins on WhatsApp first and we will tell you how we would value them before the shop posts anything.
  5. Accept or decline. Accept and the charity’s registered bank account is paid by Faster Payments; we aim to pay within one working hour of acceptance. Decline and the items come back free of charge by tracked, signed-for post. There is no restocking fee, and nobody rings to push for a yes.

What GoldPaid buys from Bangor charity shops

We take the donation pile as it arrives at the shop. Gold of any carat (including broken chains, single earrings, dental gold, sovereigns and Krugerrands). Silver (sterling 925, hallmarked solid silverware, tea sets, cutlery canteens, candelabra, salvers, bullion). Platinum and palladium (jewellery and bullion). Costume jewellery in bulk by the kilo, no sorting required. Watches of every kind, vintage, designer, modern, broken, pocket, movement-only, parts. Coins (sovereigns, Krugerrands, Britannias, pre-1947 UK silver). Medals and militaria. (Named-maker pottery, porcelain and vintage cameras are out of GoldPaid’s scope; send a photo and we will identify them free and point you at the auction route.) The full list is on what we buy, but if a piece is not on the list, the shop should send a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.

Don’t sort the donation pile. Tangled costume jewellery, broken pieces, mixed lots and unidentified items can all go in the same parcel. Every item is XRF-tested at no cost. Because XRF reads only the top few microns of a surface it cannot by itself see through plating, so anything that could be plated is also checked against the hallmark, the weight and, where needed, a further test before it is priced. The Bangor shop is paid for confirmed gold, silver and platinum on their own lines, for bulk costume jewellery by the kilo, and for any specialist items accepted.

How the process supports your reporting

Every payment goes to the charity’s registered bank account by Faster Payments. Never to a personal account, a shop till, a suspense account, or a volunteer. English and Welsh charities are verified at onboarding through the Charity Commission for England and Wales register. The account of record cannot be changed without a written request from the head-office contact, using the registered charity email domain. Every parcel produces a unique reference, an itemised valuation, the offer made, the offer acceptance confirmation, and the Faster Payment transaction reference. That is a clean audit trail for the finance team.

The valuation method is designed to be auditable by someone with no specialist knowledge. Precious metals are XRF-tested and priced against the live precious-metal market on the day of valuation, with both the reading and the market price shown on the report. Watches and antiques are assessed individually, and each one is listed with its own figure on the written offer. How we value gold and XRF testing explained set the method out in full. The trustee briefing is written for trustees and retail directors.

Multi-shop charities with shops in Bangor

If a charity runs more than one shop in Bangor or across the wider Gwynedd estate, we suggest a pilot: five shops, thirty days. Pick five shops across different postcode profiles, give each manager the WhatsApp number, and run for a month. At the end of thirty days the retail director and finance director review the monthly roll-up report and decide on rollout. No contract, no setup fee, no minimum volume, no exclusivity. For multi-shop charities walks through the pathway.

Free jewellery training for Bangor charity shops

GoldPaid runs a free monthly online training session for charity retail teams, and it is open to every shop and volunteer in Bangor. The session covers how to spot donated gold, silver, watches and hallmarks before they are underpriced. It is part of the Charity Jewellery Recovery Programme, which brings the free training and this online-and-postal valuation route together. See the free training page to register your team.

Charity shops in other cities and towns

Because it all happens by post, the same service is open to a charity shop anywhere in the UK. There are pages for Wrexham, Chester and Liverpool. Other Wales charity-shop pages on the identical postal-first process: Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Aberystwyth. The full list is on charity gold buying across the UK, the directory of every town GoldPaid covers.

If the charity decides not to sell

There is never any obligation to accept. If the offer is not right for the charity, decline and everything is returned free of charge by tracked, signed-for post, along with payment for anything the charity did accept from the same parcel. No restocking fee, no follow-up pressure calls. What happens if I decline the offer spells the return process out.

Indicative figures vs the firm offer

The pricing note. Any rough estimates we share on WhatsApp move with the precious-metal market. The firm offer for a Bangor parcel is only set after XRF assay confirms the actual purity and weight of the specific items the shop sent. The written itemised report is the binding number.

Reading a town mark on Bangor donations

Chester had its own assay office until 1962, striking three wheatsheaves and a sword. Any piece carrying that town mark was assayed at Chester before 1962, so the mark alone puts an age on it. Its punch is one of the easiest to recognise once you have seen it: three sheaves of corn around an upright sword. If a Bangor volunteer cannot place a picture-punch, photograph it close up and send it on WhatsApp: reading it costs nothing. The full set is on UK assay office marks, and how to date a hallmark by its letter explains the year letters.

Why sell to GoldPaid

GoldPaid is a small, owner-run UK business built on one promise: show the working. Every item is weighed and XRF-assayed, and every offer is itemised in writing. Postage is free and tracked both ways, and there is never a countdown or a hard sell. If something is worth more to a specialist than to us, we say so.

What if the offer is not right for the Bangor charity?

Decline and everything comes back free of charge by tracked, signed-for post, with payment for anything the charity did accept from the same parcel. Nothing is deducted for the return, and no one calls to ask the charity to reconsider.

A written itemised valuation with a figure next to every piece, a written summary suitable for forwarding to head office or the board, the Faster Payment transaction reference, and a clean parcel-reference log (sending shop, date posted, date valued, date paid).
